CAPEX ( Capital Expenditure) refers to the purchase of long-term assets such as machinery, land, warehouse, factories. In the CIPS study guide, the author refers capital purchases as “the spending of money with a view to making money”. This means that financial benefits of capital purchases will be received over time.
What are the common features of capital purchases?
- Capital purchases incur multiple types of costs during its useful life, so price is not the only important factor. Buyers need to consider additional expenses such as installation cost, maintainance cost, operating cost, end of life cost…to evaluate supplier’s proposal accurately and comprehensively. Total cost of ownership should be considered to avoid hidden costs and budget overruns.
